Main uses of «rather»:
The word «rather» has different uses, among which we can highlight three:
- When he got home he was rather tired.
- I’d rather not drink any coffee in the afternoons. Otherwise, I have trouble sleeping at night.
- He looked excited rather than nervous.
So, analysing the sentences above, let’s see the meaning of «rather» in each one of them:
- rather tired = quite/very/considerably tired
- would rather not drink = (would) prefer not to drink
- excited rather than nervous = excited instead of nervous, or more excited than nervous
