If you love the Internet, chances are, you love GIFs. I’m a sucker for them. I even have a GIF keyboard app installed on my iPad to react to text message news with a simple GIF from my favourite TV shows. I know, I know, embarrassing. But it’s cool.
GIFs can also be used for learning a language. I’ve put together some GIFs for you to help you remember some common English phrasal verbs. The idea is that the simple action shown in the moving picture will trigger your memory more so than an often overly complicated explanation in other English words! I hope you enjoy these phrasal verbs expressed as GIFs.
Phrasal verbs may make you want to burst into tears when you’re learning English.
You probably don’t feel like bursting out laughing because they’re just so complicated!
But you hang in there / hang on in there and keep learning them.
You’re constantly looking them up in the dictionary and online…
You find yourself telling friends to shut up when you’re studying…
…and hanging up on your mum when she calls.
Your partner just doesn’t understand. You have no choice but to break up. These phrasal verbs aren’t going to learn themselves.
There’s no time to treat yourself and make over your whole look…
Or to cook up a storm in the kitchen…
Or to pick up your children from school.
(Let’s hope they don’t get run over whilst waiting for you.)
But after all this time studying phrasal verbs, you realise you’re beginning to fall in love with them.
Soon, you’ll be blown away by how good your phrasal verb knowledge is.
All you have to do is keep going. Don’t give up and soon you’ll be feeling like this…

The post is very visual and useful, and anything that has a Leslie Knope gif could be considered as perfect.
Thanks Mer! Definitely had to get Leslie Knope in there! 😉
That was such a fantastic read. Well done! Fantastic job.
