(RESULTS) 5 Twitter Polls to Test your Use of English

Last week I posted 5 Twitter polls to test your use of English. You had about 5 days to vote, and now the time has run out and the polls have ended. So we’re going to go over the results real quick to see how you guys did.

1. Phrasal verbs

Well done! The correct phrasal verb was «to come up against», which means «to be faced with or opposed by», usually, a problem, negative situation, opposition, etc.

2. Collocations

Awesome! We say «to hold someone accountable for something» when we want to say that someone is «required or expected to justify actions or decisions». The verbs «hold» or «be» collocate with «accountable».

3. Idiomatic expressions

Great! Yes, there is an idiomatic expression («there’s no point in doing something» or «there isn’t any point in doing something») which means that something is not necessary or worth it.

4. Idioms

Well done, too! We say «to be over the hill» when we want to say that someone is too old and past their best time.

5. Grammar

Fabulous! If we want to express a regret, we normally use «I wish + past perfect», like in this case, where we are regreting not having visitited Granada.
